Aala Oni
Lives and works in New York, NY, USA
Artist statement
Aala Oni is a Brooklyn based California-native painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. Primarily self taught, as a San Francisco art school dropout, Oni relies heavily on emotive production and conceptual renderings rather than standardized technique. Oni's work dances dauntingly with the intermixing of politicized concepts such as: Black femme identity, queerness, hyper sexuality, and mental illness while marrying those concepts with evocative variations of form, gestures, shapes, stylized markings, and peculiar textures. Her works typically land on large grounds with mixed media and vibrant, eccentric hues. Oni is now base in New York, preparing to explore France on residency, and works out of her Bushwick studio.
