Adonis Stoantzikis

Lives and works in Athens, Greece

Artist statement

Adonis Stoantzikis works across painting and sculpture, investigating how a surface can suggest, conceal, or physically contain an interior. Cavities, translucent layers, and accumulated matter recur throughout his work, connecting the depth constructed within a painting to the actual volume of a sculptural body. Form emerges through accumulation, erosion, and material transformation rather than through the depiction of a predetermined subject. In his paintings, successive layers of colour and their partial removal allow forms to appear and recede. In his sculptures, modelling and the combination of polymer clay and resin give related forms physical weight, openings, and surfaces that shift between opacity and translucency. These processes produce liminal bodies: forms that recall organic structures without belonging to an identifiable organism. They remain suspended between the familiar and the unrecognisable, suggesting something living while revealing their constructed nature. His ongoing body of work, A-VOID-IN(G)-MATTER, marks a shift from investigating the painted surface towards exploring the emergence of form across painting, sculpture, and space. The relationship between these media rests on a shared question: how does a form acquire presence through the material that holds it? A painted cavity offers a depth that remains an image; a sculptural opening makes that depth physically present. Moving between the two allows Stoantzikis to explore this liminal condition,...
