Aimilia Antoniou
Lives and works in Tilburg, Netherlands
Artist statement
Aimilia Antoniou is a Greek-Romanian multidisciplinary artist and researcher based in the Netherlands. Her research is concerned with the notions of home(less), collectivity and memory. There is a drastic loss of home, however, she believes even if lost, the physical and the non-physical space of it still interacts with people’s psyche. She feels there is an urgency to investigate home as a collective concept and wishes for her practice and research if not to just raise awareness to also create space for reconfiguring the ideas of home. Memory and intimacy have materiality which surrounds us daily. This materiality is our actual homes collectively creating our living web, our cities and villages. Her research question comes down to if there is a way to create collective homes in the public sphere, even if they are temporary or nomadic. Her practice is playful, sometimes collective and often has an activist approach. She is working with painting, video and photography. She creates environments, while sometimes her works include audio. She is learning through making and making through learning whereas both feed each other constantly. In the past she has been educated as a painter and researcher. Her work has been exhibited among others in the Former Public Tobacco Factory of Athens, Arte Borgo Gallery in Rome, Skopje Osten Biennial, Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum and Club Lokaal in Breda.
