Artist statement
My artwork investigates social and political issues surrounding consumerism, feminism, and animal rights. Often referencing consumer culture, my work explores the complex relationship between humans and non-human animals. Having engaged in subjects including sustainability, animal testing, factory farming, reproductive rights, and beauty standards, my work frequently combines various visual languages that produce uncanny objects or images intended to create further inquiry. As an interdisciplinary artist, I incorporate various materials into my artworks, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, recycled plastics, wood, organic material, and found objects, to create artworks that shed light on sociopolitical issues. I am currently exploring the notion that art can create change- starting with the local community. Art can be used as an opportunity to communicate, educate, and be transformative to the viewer. This pedagogical approach has led me to occasionally open my art to social practice and invite the local community to participate in my artwork. In an interview, Sue Coe, an animal rights activist and political artist, states, “Art always has to go beyond human health, human drama, and human issues. It has to be about social justice for all animals, including us.” With my art, I intend to continue bringing complex issues between humans and non-human animals to the forefront, ultimately illuminating hard truths in favor of a change.
