Artist statement
Growing up in the predominantly lower class and underprivileged town of Charleston Il, I have personally witnessed strife and struggle in a unique way. I have come to better understand the way in which struggle illuminates the many facets of the human condition that are unseen in other places. The inability to overcome, the ability to overcome, and the incredibly complex motif of struggle, in my opinion, is a great example of the duality of man. Inequality and oppression are key words that play through my head as I create and attempt to approach these issues in a sincere manner. No matter the material, I am considering traumas and events that have influenced why myself and so many others often feel beat down in today’s ever-fluid life of poverty. While the main theme of the work expresses frustration at the Capitalist machine via the abuse of lower-class citizens, production and commodification are topics that are also imbedded in the many layers of narrative I attempt to disclose in the work. Whether working with lottery tickets, advertisements, paint, or various other media this work is my personal social and political response conveyed in a visual language.
