Artist statement
A friend once called me an evil dollmaker, and I suppose they were not wrong. Pulling from ideas of isolation, otherness, and suburban America, I create work that is both playful and unsettling. Ambiguous forms, fast-paced gestures, and nonsensical perspectives create uncanny settings that mirror the interior worlds of the figures themselves. Painted tiles become plushy pillows, sweeping fields of color become smoky atmospheres, and water droplets are signified through scratched oil paint. Painting offers a portal where the viewer becomes an intruder into psychological landscapes that expand into sculptural paintings and installations, muddying distinctions between mediums. Art making becomes a place to think, pose questions, and imagine an alternative world where power dynamics can be playfully shifted and redefined. My practice is a way of looking inward and outward; a mechanism to conceal, expose, and affirm my existence.
