Artist statement
Amy Mizrahi (born in 1992) is a self-taught painter from Liverpool. In 2017, Amy embarked on a three-month artist residency in Los Angeles and was later chosen for the Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop ‘Radical Residency’ in London, resulting in a group exhibition. Amy represented her artist studios in an artist exchange with Generator Projects in Dundee, Scotland, and was recently selected for ‘Fairartfair’ Womxn exhibition in 2022. Amy is enrolled on a PhD at the Manchester School of Art, where she is using her artistic practice to examine how surrealist painting might be used as a contemporary language when exploring the self-taught artist's biography. Amy Mizrahi’s surreal paintings attempt to break free from the traditional assumptions of beauty. Through the autobiographical nature of her work, Amy explores and confronts themes of ‘invisible’ disability, dreams, heritage and escapism; seeking to engage the viewer in the realities of life as a female and working-class artist. Amy paints using a juxtaposition of uncommon imagery and takes inspiration from the uncanny and unconventional. She uses a range of colours and bizarre imagery to evoke a sense of freedom and nostalgia within the viewer and to create a dream-like world that the viewer can escape within.
