Amy Pachowicz
Lives and works in San Diego, CA
Artist statement
Amy Pachowicz is a San Diego based painter working with themes of nostalgia and human storytelling. I’ve been working on a number of related themes for the last 15-20 years. They are like interlocking circles overlapping. I reproduce images from a 1967 Encyclopedia Britannica and make large scale collages from the same encyclopedia and other print media from my childhood. I dry bundles of plants in my studio and collect feathers and branches to draw and paint at a large scale. I sketch imagery from ancient western and non western texts and compile glyphs, iconographic imagery and words from dead languages into mystical scenes. The overlap and intersection of these themes is human language and image making. And our vain attempt to understand human consciousness and nature. For all of our expertise and classification of the natural world we still can’t really tell each other why we exist, or agree on what is the best way to exist while we are here.
