Artist statement
I’m an interdisciplinary project-based artist, who centers painting and drawing in conversation with installation, video and performance. My research stems from a Black feminist lens reflecting on identity, oppression, and erasure. Within my work, I form new mythologies linked to mysticism, imbued with surrealist and abstract methodologies that cultivate agency and expand upon notions of visibility. Currently, my work explores perception and spectral vision with a focus on concepts related to astral planes and theories of ethereal worlds. I use these frameworks metaphorically to speak towards the societal double bind of being seen and not in reference to my lived experience and identity. Through these pursuits, my works amplify processes of art making that speak towards multidimensional states of being, a gesture propelling into modes of expansion. In making works that point toward states of being that are beyond the physical, I also integrate perspectives and theories pertaining to Black critical thought, such as Patricia Hill Collins’ formulations of hypervisibility, Édouard Glissant’s sentiments and views on the right to opacity, and Orlando Patterson’s concepts of social death. It’s through these dialogues and pairings that my work has developed into perceptual modalities akin to spirits, depicting realities just beyond reach.
