Anna Lipscomb
Lives and works in Chicago, IL, USA
Artist statement
Lipscomb's work examines a transitory nature to perceivably feminine anatomy and ornamentation to highlight the importance of augmentation as an act of control, strength, and protection of one's self. This augmentation is also a communal act, as Lipscomb creates modular parts to be transferable between multiple creatures. Through sculpture, installation, and performance- communal augmentation signifies the shared cultural knowledge and practices developed by those marginalized to sustain themselves; whether that be to achieve the necessity of using public transit, walking home at night, or to sustain pleasure and serenity in the ability to transform and conceal. Thus, the ambiguity of one’s body becomes power while traversing a public space that commodifies, villainizes, sexualizes, abuses, and dictates the feminine body to be incapable and unworthy. By allowing body parts to be both detachable, and aesthetically fragmented and transient- Lipscomb work looks to inspire freedom and control for those who feel the heaviness affixed onto the feminine body.
