Artist statement

Apolo Gomez's multidisciplinary work is an exploration of queerness, Latinx identity, and desire. His work challenges machismo culture and celebrates the potency of softer masculinity. Through intimate portraits, Gomez captures the vulnerability and intimacy of desire, offering a nuanced perspective on human connections. The importance of championing marginalized voices within the queer community is seen in "Phantoms of History: Queer Erasure", where he addresses the historical suppression and erasure of these voices, advocating for their rightful place in our narratives. In addition, Gomez's work tackles critical issues, such as HIV prevention and sexual health, symbolized by "PrEPñata," which serves as a reminder of the importance of informed dialogue within latinx communities. Informed by his personal journey, including overcoming cancer, Gomez's work explores mortality and vulnerability faced by these communities. Ultimately, his work is a call to action to break the cycle of shame within the queer experience.
