Artist statement

At the core of my work is a search to understand the relationship between state, subject, and image. My practice is structured around long-form research projects and experimental modes of making. I use appropriation and montage to pose questions about systems of power at play in image production and circulation. My photographs and videos critique the process of imaging through the apparatus of the camera and mass-media systems. The software and hardware of television are often a starting point for my research. My projects engage with TV's unique liveness and omnipresence as I remediate communal moments of tragedy and spectacle transmitted initially by television. This approach creates a sense of temporal displacement, allowing me to delve into how history is constructed and examine nostalgia's risks.
