Bas Geerts

Lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Artist statement

How can an authority from a certain anonymity destroy another human being? Why is one life worth more than another? Why is the inhumanity of violence so often hushed up? Questions like these underlie a series of double portraits by Bas Geerts, begun in 2023. These are paintings in which the silhouettes of two people are united, superimposed, as a debunking of the disproportionality of their relationship. Matyla Dosso and Ursula von der Leyen, Dareen Al-Bayaa and Yitzhak Herzog, Emmett Till and Carolyn Bryant: portraits in which the victim is given a voice, while the perpetrator is exposed as such.
