Bea Emilia Hogan
Lives and works in New York, USA
Artist statement
In masks cloaked in textural flowing facades are individual fractured personas of how Bea (B.E.) views herself, an allegory of shame, the wants and fears of living as an outsider within the complexities of our current social structure. The escape of seeking refuge inside oneself starts off as a safety mechanism but becomes a trap. Bea is looking for a way out of the confines of this subcutaneous maze of roughly painted bare utility surfaces marred by the ever-increasing time that has past through them. Throughout the process Bea builds in to each painting a history of layered and removed material to create an evolution of this timeline. Utilizing her experience and understanding of industrial coatings in relation to the more traditional materials, her surfaces are dynamic and ever seem to be changing. It draws you into an experiential interaction with the creatures within the confinement of their spaces.
