Benjamin Adelmann
Lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, USA
Artist statement
With a background in both painting and philosophy, Benjamin is deeply interested in the use of art as an actionable event of theories of knowledge. Benjamin's paintings are noted for their epistemic bearing in the questions that they invoke- problems within metacognition and truth are wrestled with and exposed. Concept, process and visual outcome align as one, producing works that witness through their own self-evidence. For Warped, Adelmann has engineered a series of abstract paintings that explore both human- and digital-born forms of creativity and the similarities or differences between the two. Warped problematizes notions of objectivity-vs-subjectivity, representation-vs- abstraction, and cognition-vs-imagination. Each new Warped piece uses a work from the artist's Terrain series as source material. Adelmann runs photographic images of the paintings through computer graphics software and re-paints the resulting compositions by hand. Terrain culminates in Warped, with each of the two phases complicating and unraveling the learning of the other.
