Artist statement
As a physical object, the book mirrors the human body in the way we label its parts--a spine and binding like flesh. Printed words and images mirror memory and are artifacts or fragments of a much larger experience. The body, like the book, is ephemeral and transitory. The book is both a subject and resource for the investigations informing my practice. I draw from a broad field of disciplines including astronomy, anthropology, and cartography. The language, history, and representational practices of these diverse disciplines will occasionally intersect in compelling ways offering glimpses into where we are defined, constructed, or marginalized. It is not just what is present that informs my work, but what is absent. A blank book, an obliterated passage in a painting, or a ledger without entries are all indicative of absence, but also placeholders for potential realities.
