Artist statement

Brie Ashlie works primarily in mixed media and acrylic paint, drawing from photographs she takes of her surroundings, capturing bodies, patterns, and structural forms that resonate with daily experience. These images act as both reference and starting point, guiding an intuitive painting process built through layering and revision. Rather than functioning as literal collage, this process operates like a visual assembling of fragments, where images shift, dissolve, and re-emerge through paint. Through these layers, subject and composition begin to merge, allowing form and image to develop simultaneously. Brie’s paintings explore intimacy, connection, and the ambiguity of self. By moving between moments of clarity and obscurity, her work reflects on boundaries between people, between memories, and within ourselves.
