Artist statement

Brigitta Kocsis Artist statement I paint bodies in flux. Figures merge with painterly surfaces to form polymorphic shapes in constant transformation. Navigating the tension between representation and abstraction, my characters emerge or dissolve into patterned spaces that disrupt conventional legibility. Through layering, fragmentation, and digital aesthetics, I render the body mutable, reflecting the ways mediated culture shapes embodiment. My practice uses references to myth and digital systems to examine structures of race, gender, and power. By reinterpreting classical iconographies with glitch aesthetics, I view digital algorithms as contemporary myth-making systems that shape social hierarchies and control visibility. Rather than locating monstrosity in the othered figure, I propose it is embedded within the system itself: a patriarchal digital gaze that seeks to control alterity. Coming from a diasporic and mixed-ethnicity background, and navigating conditional whiteness, I view identity as an ongoing negotiation. I use painting to reclaim a speculative future that resists this standardized gaze. By queering Eurocentric archetypes like Medusa, I reposition these bodies in contexts of transformation, care, and resilience.
