Artist statement

In my work, I pursue 'community’ as a shifting/complex, social landscape and vessel for codes, narratives and characters. I engage my community, as irrational, contradictory and economically poor. Here, I consider the politicalisation of racialised bodies in these communities and the spaces we inhabit---as congregations in these spaces occur in response to living-conditions on the 'outside;' a deep-seated relationship between 'public' and 'private' spaces, which in the context of the ‘third-world ’ (as an idea beyond a place) are frequently the same. Migration as a performative, surreal experience shapes my practice, centred on my communities’ recycling and occupancy of places/territory; forming 'fugitive-environments' as sets/scenes for scheming, demystifying, and the blossoming of something ‘new.' My intent is to build worlds, in which other worlds can be built; embracing recurring/circular-ends, pushing for continuation/praxis, reconciling our intimacy with death and a transient, cosmic existence. I propose personal-narratives as a confessional language, which I situate within/through reconstructions/re-imaginings of familiar settings; which are activated by performing bodies through communal/collective stagings. This, to measure the romance between the performance of representation, and the mapping of loss and plight that make up the socio-political significance of emotions and needs; under the urgency of material violence, tragedy and mourning.
