Artist statement
Artist Statement My images of Black women embody the Divine Feminine, a spiritual state of inner being focusing on nurturing, wisdom, adaptability, and creativity. They are about being empowered by forming a deep connection with nature. The union of Black women with nature speaks to how we occupy space in the world and concentrates on finding a place of belonging and refuge. My art envisions Black women joining with nature for mutual protection and healing. A major goal of my work is for viewers to shift the way they see Black women. Even though one Black African woman is the source of all humankind, when seen through the American lens of skin color, we are still disempowered and de-feminized. My dream is to express in my art our irrepressible power and beauty. Carla Golder
