Artist statement

My work is a manifestation, or amalgamation of great contradiction to every aspect of my life. Perhaps even the labeling of these works as “paintings” is the greatest contradiction of all. The objects and forms are present, physically, they interrupt the air and space around them in an attempt to pull themselves free from their framed confines. Often times i trace the structure of my work back to my roots as an animator, thinking of each piece as a single cell, far removed from any continuation of a narrative. Text often comes into play, functioning as both punchline and diversion, or subversion of the image that is presented.Ultimately i don't believe in a narrative aspect to my work, as this implies illustration, I do however feel that these works are conjured and inspired by rural life in the South. I create images, that is my job, it is the job of anyone who cares to look at these images to interpret and assign individual meanings.
