Artist statement
At the heart of my practice is the conscious decision to remove the distraction of colour, allowing form, light, and shadow to speak more deeply. By working solely within a monochromatic blue palette, I create an aesthetic akin to the cyanotype process, blurring the line between traditional oil painting and photographic techniques. This blue tone is not merely an artistic choice—it mirrors the subtle hues of dawn and dusk, echoing the natural rhythms of light that govern our circadian cycles. Although my process is rooted in the tactile richness of oil paint, there is ethereal cyanotype quality, a medium historically used to document nature with precision and simplicity. Like the cyanotype, my paintings seek to capture fleeting moments of beauty, rendered timeless in the absence of colour. In this way, the works become a reflection of the delicate balance between the natural world and the internal landscapes we navigate daily. In exploring the interplay between organic forms and this limited palette, I find a quiet power in restraint. The absence of colour invites viewers to consider the ways in which light shapes our perception of the world. The blue tones suggest both the cool calm of early morning and the deep, introspective stillness of twilight, moments when the body is most in tune with its natural rhythms. These temporal shifts of day and night are essential to my work, evoking a sense of time and transition, and connecting viewers to the cyclic nature of life.
