Artist statement
Motherhood has changed the way I understand vulnerability, protection, resilience, and the environments we create for ourselves and for the people we love. Through these experiences, I have become increasingly interested in the invisible forces that exist between people: the energy we exchange, the emotional weight we carry into a space, and the ways another person’s presence can alter how we feel, see, and remember. Painting gives me a way to explore experiences that are difficult to articulate directly. I am particularly interested in dissociation, the feeling of being simultaneously present and distant from oneself, and in the fragmented, altered quality of memory that can accompany difficult experiences. My blurred forms and obscured landscapes reflect this space between seeing and remembering, presence and absence, clarity and uncertainty. Rather than depicting a specific moment, I am interested in the emotional residue a moment leaves behind. Nature has become an important part of this investigation. I am drawn to the way environments can affect our nervous systems, our memories, and our sense of safety. Water, fog, flowers, trees, sky, light, and expansive landscapes can create a feeling of stillness and possibility. I think about nature not simply as a subject, but as an active participant in healing, a place where the boundaries between the self and the surrounding world begin to soften.
