Artist statement
I make drawings and sculptural pieces that deal with matter, time, consciousness, and environmental concerns. Historically, graphite pencil on clay board has been my medium of choice. In recent years, however, I have also incorporated the traditional crafts of wool needle felting and paper folding into my work. Whichever media I choose, they are all connected through an unconventional approach to the material, along with a detailed, time consuming process. I tend to work in series, deeply exploring ideas as a way to satisfy a curiosity, as a tool to learn, or to process ruminative thoughts. Currently, through drawings of nuclear blast scars on the Nevada desert floor, paper interpretations of elements used in nuclear bombs, and nuclear bomb clouds made of felted wool, I am exploring how nuclear anxiety is intertwined with the dark beauty, awe, and fascination found in this terrorizing force. Past series delved into subjects such as the nature of time, renewal, mental states, and nuclear contamination. Based in Los Angeles, my formal education includes a bachelor's degree in Studio Art from Kutztown University and a master's degree in Art History from Pratt Institute. While formal art training served as a strong foundation, I attribute my unique perspective to my near-decade-long career at an auction house, where I handled a vast and diverse amount of artwork, both as a specialist and a cataloger.
