Artist statement

Christopher Edward Rodriguez creates landscapes that challenge our understanding of untouched wilderness. His photographs explore connections between nature and the imagination, transforming seemingly natural scenes into meditations on how we perceive and shape the natural world. His ongoing project, Afterlife, investigates how contemporary landscape photography mediates ideas of the sublime, ecological change, and perception. Drawing from the writings of 19th-century naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, who championed a view of nature as an interconnected, dynamic system, Afterlife treats landscape not as a fixed subject, but as an active participant shaped by cultural, technological, and imaginative forces. He’s exhibited at Maybaum Gallery, Sasha Wolf Gallery, Transmitter, Newspace Center for Photography, Sarah Shepard, Current Space, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, among others. His images have also been featured in the New York Times, Humble Arts Foundation, Wired Magazine, Les Others and the Huffington Post. His first monograph, Sublime Cultivation , 2014 is in the collection of the Newspace Center of Photography Library. Originally from New Orleans, he earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Louisiana State University and received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts inNew York City. A visual arts educator, he has taught at several institutions including Pratt, ICP, and the School of Visual Arts. He has attended residencies at the Wassaic Project and Platte Clove...
