Artist statement
My work explores the intersection of self and society in contemporary culture, using diverse mediums to create visual stories that blend autobiography with shared human experience. Part rumination, part observation, I hope to help viewers navigate the fraught relationships between their own interior and exterior worlds. The simplicity of the work contrasts with the complexity of its content. And, as a folk documentarian, the playful repetition of typography and patterns conveys the anxieties of the digital age with empathy and humor, prompting consideration of larger questions of identity and worth. The beauty of slight imperfections mirrors the fluidity and fragility of life. Culling from pop culture, self-help materials, Catholic ritual, sexuality, and childhood memories, I reveal personal vulnerabilities, and hope to free others to do the same. The use of materials reflect a focus on everyday life, and I embrace traditional mediums, including painting and printmaking, with new experimentations in sound and video.
