Artist statement

LAN Chung-Hsuan's image-based practice examines war, disaster, historical events, and aerospace technology through reworked photography, found imagery, archival materials, and historical objects. Employing strategies of appropriation, erasure, and reconfiguration, he destabilizes the documentary image, positioning it between memory, history, and fiction. Rather than recounting historical events, his work investigates how images construct, mediate, and erase history, revealing the relationships between images, power, time, and technology, as well as the presence and absence of the individual within larger systems.
