Lives and works in Detroit, MI, USA
Artist statement
Utilizing photo-based 3D scanning, I augment scans of my own body to create simulations of new life forms. I am working to develop sculptures, videos, and images abstractly depicting speculative life in an attempt to dismantle the gender binary. The new bodies I devise are not an apology for my current form, but rather a chance to consider the state of becoming. Working in digital media has allowed me to create simulated worlds, each with distinct internal logic. Within these worlds, I create space that questions hierarchies, boundaries, and expectations. Sculptures reference factitious organs, body parts, and interstitium; a network of fluid-filled spaces flowing throughout the in-between of our entire bodies. This body of work explores these amorphous forms as alternative organisms. Rather than using figures based on humanoid structures, I will build figures more closely related to sea creatures, such as the newly discovered jellyfish with a transient anus, the moray eel, and the magnapinna squid.
