Artist statement

Growing up in both America and England, Corey Whyte sets his foundations on consumerism and cultural identity. While objectifying the consumer experience, he creates artefacts from the regurgitative culture we are swaddled by, together with an exploration and nomadic vigilance on the human condition and bastardisation of history. Considering this, Corey takes influence from polytheistic ancient mythologies namely Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Norse, but also, from his more formative years, 90s pop culture TV such as Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! transporting the duality between worship and god-like complex and permeating his work with the intention of taking aim at society, capitalism and self. Corey's approach to making is laced with iconoclastic language, whilst simultaneously allowing research to dictate his disruption through art process, he violates the ready made construct with a sculptors mind. The works are forced into existence; there is a struggle between artist, material and vision, birthing something unwillingly collaborative and unapologetically from the Studio. It's a draining fight with material, time and the ever-changing identity of the work, where both artist and material have thoughts towards an outcome. Often traces of process and disassociated materials, personal touches and finishing methods are applied to the visual experience, Othering the work as a whole, further.
