Artist statement

My artwork is meaningful because my signature are inspired by the multisensory quality of traditional African clothing. Different beaded African garments are adorned with different types of beads to signify meanings including social status, and to ward off negativity. In most African contexts these statuses can be understood solely by hearing the specific sound of the traditional attire. Similar can be said for my portraits, especially when applied to the differences between tee-shirts and bags I've designed and the canvas portraits that I make. When they are stuck to the taut surface of the canvas, my images take on a drum-like quality, and can be tapped from the back to hear the drum and rattling sound. When they're applied to accessories and clothes, the portraits feel even more like a response to African attire, because the clothes I design rattles when the person wearing them shimmys or waves the clothing. Therefore the clothes I design have their own unique voice, which I like because their sound signifies the status of someone who appreciates the influence of African artistry, on my innovative contemporary practice. My work has been recognised by the Global Leaders Institute, garnering nominations for the 2026 Global Art Prize for Innovation, by an awarding body that included Carolina Herrera and Chucho Valdes.
