Artist statement
Deborah Yasinsky is a multi-media artist. Through relationships, childhood and parenting, she explores issues of memory, nostalgia, vulnerability, and environmentalism. She utilizes recycled non-traditional materials, including fabrics referencing her early training in textile/surface design. Her video animations are narratives of childhood, often replaying fragmented memories and experiences. The figure is often set in nature amidst flora and fauna, reminiscent of her own childhood exploring Inwood, NYC, it's parks, the Hudson River and public spaces of the region. She draws inspiration from medieval manuscripts, and Victorian motifs and symbolism. She incorporates painting, drawing, assemblage, ceramics and animation into her practice.
