Artist statement

My work currently explores the still life as landscape. In these scenes, ambiguously organic forms intermingle with depictions of the plant and animal kingdoms and studio artifacts/tools, go through anthropomorphic processes, and invite the viewer to make sense of an ever evolving scene. I take from the western canon (Dutch still life, Matisse, Color Field ) and from Pre-Columbian iconography (Moche and Chavin Pre-Inca ceramic and sculpture), intuitively layering pigment and negotiating each element. Even as I draw from art-historical sources, the titles I use are often of a personal and lyrical nature, as if attempting to address said sources through the summoning of a still unidentified inner voice.
