Enrique López Llamas
Lives and works in Mexico City
Artist statement
López Llamas’ practice explores contemporary phenomena through the appropriation and reinterpretation of strategies, events, and images drawn from art history, media culture, and personal experience. By displacing these references from their original contexts, his work opens up new layers of meaning and unexpected readings. Fiction, humor, and nostalgia operate as key tools across his practice, which unfolds through painting, video, performance, and installation. Working within a speculative and evocative narrative framework, López Llamas engages with artistic traditions that have questioned representation and its influence on collective imaginaries. Through this dialogue, his work interrogates the structures of power and the codes that shape contemporary life, situating itself in a pendulum between past and present, between what's intimate and what's shared. His motivation stems from the need to confront these cultural narratives with his own history, recognizing artistic practice as a space for critical and playful speculation—one capable of resonating with others. Ultimately, his work can be understood as a blend of cultural, historical, and personal references in which the allegorical, the contemplative, and the comedic coexist.
