Artist statement
Erika Rios Hickle's (born 1985, San Diego, United States) practice spans painting, textile, photography, printmaking, and installation, and explores themes of mythologies, spiritualism, and the body. Her work examines self portraiture and the quotidian as well as mythic archetypes ranging from saints, vampires, and the likes, to further explore the feminine. Most recently she has created a series of hanging mixed media artworks. Employing photographic prints and silkscreens rendered in canvas, supple repurposed fabrics such as velvet, silk, linen, that are affixed in time/space with staples and pins, reiterating ideas on the instability of representation – its model as inexact multiple, one that bleeds, a multi-angular (never perfect) close-up. Several recurring subject matter can be recognised, such as the relationship with self portraiture, the everyday (images and materials), working with repetition, provocation and the investigation of the process of expectations. Erika Rios currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
