Artist statement

In my artwork I utilize materials that would typically be used to decorate a home, like wallpaper and fabric. I also use materials associated with domestic crafts, like sewing patterns and sequins. These items are mostly sourced from local thrift stores. I employ them in my collages to depict natural forms abstractly while creating a human connection to the natural world. My work is grounded in the Pattern and Decoration Movement that began in the 1970s and I have adopted “femmage”, a term invented by the movement’s members, to describe my work. My work pays homage and brings attention to “femmage” or artwork that has always been done in the home historically by women. By using craft methodologies and fine art techniques I am blurring the line between domestic crafts and fine art. I find it is an exciting and challenging position to be in. For example, I may functionally use the sewing machine to attach a scrap of fabric to a piece of paper and simultaneously create a line with this stitching, like I would with a drawn pencil line or painted brush stroke.
