Lives and works in London, UK

Artist statement

Gabriel Cautain (b. 1997, France) lives and works in London. His practice explores the relationship between time, memory, and identity, emphasizing how everyday experiences shape both personal and collective narratives. Through sculpture and installation, he examines the shifting boundaries of visibility and remembrance, attending to what endures, fades, or remains in between. Ordinary objects serve as key points of entry; often presented in series, his works are recontextualised through repetition, which shifts perception from the singular toward collective modes of reading. Accumulation puts intimacy and anonymity into tension, and reconfigures these familiar forms by blurring the boundary between object and monument. Situated between the intimate and the collective, his work reflects on proximity and distance, and on the persistence of connections to others, places, and the past despite temporal disruptions. By creating spaces where absence and presence intersect, he suggests that identity is fluid, formed through movement across time and relationships, with distance functioning not only as separation but also as a condition for renewed forms of connection and belonging.
