Gala Hernández López
Lives and works in Berlin, Germany
Artist statement
Gala Hernández López’s work lies at the intersection of the visual arts, cinema and research. She adopts an interdisciplinary approach in which the moving image becomes both a tool for critical investigation and a visual medium exploring the modes of subjectivation specific to computational capitalism. Her approach is based on an in-depth analysis of the effects of digital flows of capital and data, which she examines through an ecofeminist and technocritical lens. In her video installations, films, publications and performances, she examines the circulation of imaginaries within virtual communities, as well as the forms of desire and visions of the future projected by disruptive technologies. Her research aims to deconstruct new reactionary techno-utopias as fictions that shape our collective unconscious. Her works are research-based and combine materialist analysis with documentary elements and speculative fiction. Drawing on a methodology that combines investigation with formal experimentation, Gala Hernández López situates her work within an ongoing dialogue between critical analysis and poetic expression. Her projects blend digital and film archives, 3D modelling, staged scenes and subjective narratives to weave a nuanced perspective on humanity’s fantasies of absolute technoscientific control over reality. Rather than adopting a strictly demonstrative stance, she seeks to question the internal contradictions within the dominant narratives of our digital cultures....
