Artist statement
My work combines relationships of my Korean heritage and geopolitics while discussing notions of war, legacies of religious systems, elements from nature, and upbringing as a Mormon. Through sculpture, images, drawing and text I draw upon the poetics of a line: how a line can serve as a marker of division and an indication of connection. With archival photos from my grandfather, a photographer in the Korean War, I trace the lineage and stories of my parents, grandparents and ancestors to consider my own. I bridge personal remembrances, history, celestial observations, and religious teachings to navigate relationships between lines — English and Korean; fact and fiction; translation and interpretation; “north” and “south”; heaven and earth; past, present, and future. Through questioning beliefs and religious systems, my work asks what does one believe and why?
