Artist statement

Since more than a decade, the meaning of „representation in painting” has been central in Golnaz Hosseini’s research and language of works. Hosseini studies the relationship between form and it's verbal meaning and examines where and how one ends and the other begins. More precisely, what are the meanings associated to a form and where does their functionality lie within a visual and verbal system; where do they fall out of it and land in a field void of any meaning. Hosseini investigates the function of the non-representational, geometric and organic formal language for visual communication, working with an extremely reduced yet effectively deployed palette. The arbitrary repetition of similar forms or shapes can symbolize an artificial unity of the single parts in the body of a system and the destructive force of sameness and reproduction. Hosseini is especially interested in the relationship between abstraction and figuration, and the question of how the real can be represented in the visual arts today.
