Artist statement
In my work I often use abstraction as a language to communicate a complicated dialogue between converging layers of visual information. My paintings emerge through process versus procedure. A variety of techniques, tools and materials are applied to create a visual field of buildups and breakdowns. Working by way of trial and error in an additive/subtractive method, the paintings develop into a collision of competing gestures. Each painting becomes a sort of snafu where unintentional entanglements of decisions build a compression of layers collapsing into an image of unsettled identity.
