Hadassah Emmerich

Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium

Artist statement

Hadassah Emmerich is known for her colorful, exuberant murals and paintings, in which she intricately weaves together stylized images of exotic fruit, human body parts, and natural elements. Her work explores themes of the body—through the sensory and the sensual—while at the same time commenting on the commodification of desire and the exotic. In addition to her striking visual language, she has also developed an original and highly technical method, using stencils cut from vinyl flooring which she then rolls with ink and prints onto canvas, paper, or walls. With references to the visual language of advertising and Pop Art, Emmerich’s hallmark is a hybrid, post-internet futuristic vocabulary that combines the human and the natural, expressing the paradox of simultaneous attraction and repulsion, intimacy and cold indifference, seduction and critical reflection.
