Hillerbrand + Magsamen

Lives and works in Houston, TX

Artist statement

For more than 30 years, Hillerbrand+Magsamen have built an interdisciplinary practice founded on a simple proposition: that the overlooked rituals, objects, and labor of everyday life are fertile ground for artistic invention. Working across photography, sculpture, performance, video, and installation, they embrace improvisation, accessibility, humor, collaboration, and domestic labor as both subject matter and methodology. Rather than positioning the viewer as a spectator of critique, they invite audiences to become active participants in acts of curiosity, play, and collective imagination. Their work explores alternative models of authorship, production, and meaning making by elevating everyday materials, overlooked spaces, and familiar actions. A single idea often reverberates across multiple forms, evolving from sculpture to photograph, performance, video, or installation. Rather than treating art as something distant or exceptional, Hillerbrand+Magsamen embrace making as a shared, lived experience where the boundaries between art and life remain intentionally porous.
