Artist statement

My practise is a reflection of my journeying as an artist in recovery… Following an absence from the arts of over 35 years… I am an artist in recovery and 10 years a creative. On that journey I discovered that storytelling is an Art...that all Art is storytelling… that stories conjure imagery from words in any language. This fuelled my existing fascination with text and image which on reflection has always existed and manifests in my earliest work. HiStory to me is the body of narratives which nations choose to tell themselves about who they are. I am continually intrigued about the stories people tell themselves about what they have done and the reasons why. I digest HiStories and spit out the bones ... into Grande Visual Narrative ArtBooks my signature style. African Violet…what began as a personal memoir grew into an exploration of British Caribbean history, painting with text as a first generation child of Windrush. Triggered by the death of my father, I responded to my mother’s grief artistically by using fine art as storytelling. Over the next 10 years exploration evolved into what will be The inaugural Grand Visual Narrative collection ‘The Purple Chapters’ as an ArtBook Triptych-Trilogy. It consists of ‘Before the Ships –( pre colonial Africa), MayBrex – (400 year Mayflower anniversary and Brexit) and African Violet...Hybrid of Circumstance (reflections of a child of the Windrush) . I relate my journey of digesting the HiStory of British Transatlantic Plantation...
