Lives and works in Denver, CO
Artist statement
My hometown of El Paso, Texas, constitutes a vital point of entry for immigrants traveling the Pan-American Highway. The city functions as both a static and transitional place; those on the go who pass through quickly, and those who stay find themselves suspended in between two or more cultures. The complexities of this in-between state are examined in my work and invoke my interests in exploring the dynamics of space, place, and alterity related to the American Dream. Through painting, sculpture, and immersive installation I incorporate layered materials, intricate patterns, graphic landscapes, and iconography related to physical barriers. The merging of materials and imagery is pivotal when examining the collision of lived experiences that complicate our understanding of place.
