Lives and works in New York, NY
Artist statement
My current work is directly informed by the drawings and stories I created as a child, placing greater emphasis on narrative than on the rules of making. I create drawings and paintings across a range of two-dimensional media and surfaces. My process begins by observing and having a “conversation” with what I have already made. This reconnects me with the work, sparks my imagination, and prepares me to respond intuitively. I do very little planning beforehand, allowing each decision to emerge from the one before it. The process gives the work a life of its own and fills the act of making with mystery and discovery. I create images that are humorous, poignant, and engaging, using whimsy to explore subjects such as war, betrayal, deceit, as well as everyday experiences like hangovers or a pet’s alter ego. I hope this sense of play makes difficult subjects more approachable while encouraging reflection.
