Artist statement

My practice is largely split between painting and writing. These two focuses don’t explicitly interact, but they do explore similar conceptual terrain and continually inform one another. I work primarily with mesh, mixing a putty together that I shape into a workable surface. The screen functions as an intermediary, a material defined by negative space. The paintings veer from figurative to abstract, the subject matter pulling largely from my own writing or from books I read. The supports I build and the way in which they interact with the room become just as critical as the painted surface.
