Artist statement

Earnest's paintings explore the play between public and private space. Public as a sense of 'the other', collective memory. Private as one's sense of self, personal history, isolated sense of space. With the spectral qualities of the work as a public experience of the private. There is a tension between illusion and allusion within the painted spaces. One major quality of this tension between allusion and illusion is that it is spectral in its nature. It is both immanent and transcendent in relation to the painting's internal space.
