Lives and works in Galveston, TX, USA
Artist statement
As an individual growing up in America, Jamie Ornelas is one of many Latin-Americans who didn’t have an opportunity to learn about her ancestor lineage and tradition of the Indigenous Americans. Having realized the newfound passion about where she comes from, she aims to portray the emotions of strength, hurt, independence and growth of what it’s like to be an individual perceiving the harsh realities of today's America. She reflects on the realities around her and the lessons to proudly move forward to respect her newfound history. The images Jamie creates are illustrated in formats of drawings and paintings on fabrics, paper, and wood. Her technical practices are made through abstract colors and bodily portraits in hopes to conceptualize the psychological appropriation of those who are trying to establish their identity along the spectrum of the human race. Jamie is continually adventuring down the rabbit hole to learn who she descends from, raise awareness, and eventually educate those around her through her art on these matters. She aims to break free from the capitalistic ways of living an unfulfilling life and inspire those around her to create their own reality. For Jamie, learning where she came from is helping her learn where she wants to go.
