Artist statement

My work is abstract, but I have found that working abstractly is another form of realism-it has a rawness, an immediacy, and a history created by marks and the range of motion of my body. Shapes that recur in my work, such as the circle and the spiral, have a sacred meaning that continues to reveal itself to me. Colors have sound. Textures have rhythm. My process is a constant intuitive response. I begin with an element, such as a drawn shape, a found object, or a piece of art that I have deconstructed. I contemplate it for a while, then respond by adding or subtracting layers. I repeat this process until I am satisfied that the work is complete.
