Artist statement

I create large-scale, vividly hued abstract paintings influenced by the Hudson Valley landscape. My work is an immersive exploration of color and space, utilizing elements from my surrounding environment—such as the intricate patterns of branches and the fluid movement of foliage—not as literal depictions, but as a foundation for abstract compositions. Through layering gestural marks that move beyond straightforward representation, I build compressed, interwoven spaces of objects and atmospheres. The materials and processes are essential to the meaning of my work. I use liquid dispersion pigments and fast-drying acrylic binders to create layers that suggest a condensed sense of time and activity. My paintings are intended to be environments amplified by color that engage the viewer on a physiological level, going beyond a purely intellectual experience. The large scale of the paintings elicits a relationship with the body, not just the eyes. They alter the atmosphere of the room and create a sense of being enveloped by the interiors of the work. Ultimately, my work offers space for open-ended imaginative play and a physical connection with color. Without requiring prior knowledge, my paintings offer an accessible environment for contemplation and beauty in an era marked by turbulent instability.
